To help you understand (SP) railroad operations, we have put up some pages from the 1960 and 1943 Rule Books (see the left frame for the start of the 1960 excerpts).
Scrolling through the left frame will take you through the signal aspect pages. These pages give the rule number, aspect name, and proper use of the semaphore and target signals in use in 1960. Scrolling through the right frame will show you the definitions pages (what in fact IS a train?) followed by the pages covering the display of markers, class lamps and train indicators. These rules indicate the proper use and nomenclature for all SP applications, and were virtually identical on the T&NO, NWP, SD&AE and the PE.
Questions have arisen regarding whistle and communication signals. Therefore, we have added four pages from the 1943 rulebook regarding both whistle signals and communication signals. Communication signals are those passed from train to engine. These rules were substantially identical to those in the 1960 rulebook, but they are easier to read in the earlier version.
