A WORKING LIST OF BOOKS AND BOOKLETS ON THE SOUTHERN PACIFIC AND RELATED SUBSIDIARIES

Compiled by
Peter J. McClosky

I have had an all abiding, life long interest in the Southern Pacific Railroad. For many years I tried to acquire as many books about the Southern Pacific as I could. I was able to buy all of the books that came into the local hobby shops, but people have been writing about the Southern Pacific for many years, and what about all those books I knew nothing about? This compilation grew out of this desire to learn all I could about the S.P.

For others with this same interest, and with the help of Paul C. Koehler (Glendale, CA), Glenn Ames (Glendale, CA), T. Fredrick Hill (Pasadena, CA), David Coscia (Altadena, CA), and Richard Percy (Karratha, Western Australia). I have been able to compile this list of books about the SP. Additional help has come from SPH&TS members, Gene Martin (Los Gatos, CA), Jim Case (Cedar City, UT), Clint Nestell (Grass Valley, CA), John Signor (Dunsmuir, CA), Forrest R. Hedrick (Henderson, NC), David F. Myrick (Santa Barbara, CA), Dennis Hogan (Dallas, TX), Kenneth G. Keels (Austin, TX), James L. Martin (Fresno, CA), Rene Scheuerman (Spring Valley, CA), Ron Dawson (El Paso, TX), Brian Rubio (Santa Cruz, CA), Larry Mullaly (Central Point, OR), John Houlihan (Fresno, CA), Mel Brown (Austin, TX), Mike O'Brien (Pasadena, Calfornia), Joseph A. Strapac (Bellflower, CA), Charles Raub (Bakersfield, CA), Laure'l Santos (Reno, NV), Malcolm Tilling (Cambridge, England), Stefano Consentino (Milano, Italy), Michael O. Brown (Oakland, CA), Joan Condell (Dallas, TX), Tim Savaglio (Liberty Township, OH. Multiple titles.), Howard A. Drozd (Location unknown, references came through the Espee Yahoo group.), Don Damour (Lewiston, Maine), and Michael Lowe (Location unknown, the information came through email). Some of the books are about the SP exclusively, while others have a good deal of information about the SP within them.

While I have not seen all of the following books or booklets, they are known to exist. Some may have incomplete title, author, publisher, or date information. Many of these are out of print. Some of the books have library locations and call numbers listed with the citation. I hope this helps others in their quest for information about the Southern Pacific Railroad.

It is my intention that this compilation be considered a living document. If I have missed any important books or booklets I would like to know about them. Please contact me through the SPH&TS, 1523 Howard Access Rd Suite A, Upland, CA 91786-2582 and the new information / correction will be included in any later editions.
